キャロル・ヴォーダマン Introductory & Beginning Editorial Review

The "Scratch 3.0 Compatible Programming Encyclopedia" is a well-received resource for children aged 10 and up, designed to introduce them to programming through the popular Scratch platform. With a visually appealing, full-color format and approximately 220 pages, the book combines education with entertainment, utilizing pixel art characters as guides throughout. Many parents commend the book's readability, particularly for beginners, remarking that the explanations of fundamental programming concepts—such as variables, functions, and coordinates—are clear and accessible. The content is aligned with recent educational reforms in Japan where programming is now a compulsory subject in schools. The book adeptly prepares students to build on their Scratch knowledge and even introduces some foundational ideas in Python, signaling a pathway to more advanced coding as children mature. Importantly, the format of presenting each lesson over two pages enriches the learning experience without overwhelming young learners. Reviews highlight the book's capability to engage children, particularly those familiar with games like Minecraft. It includes diverse programming examples ranging from geometric patterns to sound-interactive projects, catering to various interests. This flexibility allows both children and parents to explore Scratch together, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Parents have noted their children's excitement in seeing immediate results from their coding efforts, which greatly boosts interest and curiosity in programming. However, there are some critiques, particularly around sustaining interest over time. Some parents noted that while their children initially enjoy the book, they can become bored and lose focus as challenges become repetitive. Moreover, it was emphasized that while the book provides a rich learning experience, parent involvement is often necessary to assist with the initial setup of programming environments and to guide children through errors in their code. Overall, the "Scratch 3.0 Compatible Programming Encyclopedia" stands out as a great educational tool, striking a balance between fun and learning, making programming concepts both accessible and engaging for young learners. **
